The ArmMotus EMU is a rehabilitation robot for the upper extremities that enables movement in three dimensions of space. The patient is only connected to the device at a single point along the forearm, so he or she can move in a wide variety of ways: sitting or standing, with a free hand or with a handle. Furthermore, training actions can be carried out in a virtual (game) environment or with real objects. The robot simulates the touch of a therapist by exerting various forces on the patient. The cable-driven mechanism with a parallel linkage made of carbon fibre reduces the friction and inertia of the robot’s movements.
Statement by the Jury
The ArmMotus EMU impresses with a novel design for rehabilitation robotics that offers a lot of scope for individual and lifelike therapy approaches.
