Cardboard is a low-cost virtual reality headset for mobile phones. It allows the user to easily explore 3D environments and consume VR content and media. It is made from a single sheet of cardboard and shipped in a flat envelope, reducing manufacturing as well as transport and storage costs. The design templates are freely available on the Internet, which considerably simplifies both industrial manufacture and replication by individuals.
Statement by the Jury
The Cardboard VR viewer implements the concept of simplification in an outstanding way. It uses fewer resources and, thanks to the open-source philosophy, becomes a part of the community.
