Children of the Soil
“Children of the Soil” is an avant-garde film which offers a poetic depiction of how an individual identifies with the three pillars of Malayness: language, religion and royalty. The term Malayness refers to the ethnic group of Malays, the first settlers of Singapore. The film is the result of a year’s research into the presence of Malay culture in pre- and post-independent Singapore. It is loosely inspired by the works of painter and poet Latiff Mohidin. The self-made sets, costumes and the exclusively curated soundtrack from Malay films of the 1960s unfold a powerful imagery and strong symbolism.
