Multipurpose Pavilion

Faculty Club, Tilburg University

Back Download

Tilburg University has extended its campus by realising the Faculty Club, a multipurpose pavilion for academic staff and their guests. Shift architecture urbanism took the opportunity to reactivate the quintessential quality of the campus: distinctive free-standing buildings in a green setting. The Faculty Club is designed as a carved-out monolith, one simple box in which transparency and massiveness melt together. The point of reference was the monumental modernism of Jos Bedaux, who designed the University’s first buildings in the 1960s. The result is a building that is solitary, yet part of the University.

Statement by the Jury

By taking as a reference the existing architectural style, the Faculty Club combines past and present and fuses opposites: glass and stone, transparency and solidity.
