Futuristic Elegance

Ferrari’s Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni poignantly described the new mid-front-mounted V12 two-seater as follows: “The Ferrari 12Cilindri is reminiscent of a flying saucer.” And indeed, the 12Cilindri is a sports car with a completely new design language that breaks with the sculptural design of its V12 predecessors and instead favours a clearer, more geometric design. At the same time, it subtly quotes iconic models of the legendary legacy of GT cars, whose architecture has been reinterpreted – but without any nostalgic overtones. Instead, it is unmistakably futuristic: Its dynamically flowing silhouette is emphasised by a bonnet with no visible cut lines and interrupted only by two discreet air vents. The absence of the classic front and traditional headlights further emphasises the departure from conventional design patterns. A circumferential light strip with blade-like integrated daytime running lights characterises the front, while a continuous strip in the concave area of the rear makes a striking statement. Two active flaps integrated into the rear window pick up on the characteristic delta theme and reinforce the impression of technical precision. “With the 12Cilindri and the 12Cilindri Spider, Ferrari has succeeded in creating an impressive reinterpretation of the V12 GT tradition. The exterior combines formal clarity with futuristic echoes of the science fiction aesthetics of the 1970s, without promoting a retro aesthetic,” said the jury. The interior follows a double cockpit architecture that separates the driver and passenger areas and at the same time conveys a generous feeling of space. A glass roof, high-quality materials and a three-part display structure promote spatial openness and digital integration. The colour and material concept combines functionality with high design standards. The interior was developed in a hybrid process of digital simulation and physical modelling to combine design precision and emotional impact. The jury’s verdict was: “Exterior and interior complement each other to create an impressive overall picture that combines high-tech and tradition, design reduction and emotional quality at an exceptionally high level.”
