Pioneering modularity

As model updates come onto the market in quick succession and computers are frequently difficult to repair, a large number of devices are simply discarded. The design of the Framework Laptop is based on the premise that it is often only one component that needs to be replaced to enable further use of the computer. Consumers are furthermore increasingly aware of the issue of unnecessary waste when making purchases. The Framework Laptop aims to offer them a solution that is as easy to understand as it is to implement. The objective of the design concept is to demonstrate exemplary environmentally responsible behaviour. Even in the run-up to the design process, the ambition was to reach a “deep understanding” of what this product actually set out to achieve and should offer the user. Framework Laptops are thus designed to reduce waste in the long term by ensuring they last longer due to clever design and usability trade-offs. Their innovative modularity makes the 13.5" laptops easy for users to repair and upgrade themselves with the matching modules. At the same time, they are made of high-quality materials and provide enhanced ergonomics for greater user convenience. This design thus aims to give consumers back ownership of their products at an individual level. At a global level, it aims to offer a possible solution for the worsening issue of e-waste.

Statement by the Jury

The design of the Framework Laptop successfully delivers a long-overdue modular computer with interchangeable parts. Based on self-explanatory functionality, this 13.5" laptop is easy for users to take apart, repair and upgrade. The concept thus lastingly reduces waste and gives the users the opportunity to do their bit to protect the environment.
