Poster Series
Give me a hand
This poster series deals with the topic that food supplies are distributed unevenly around the globe and draws attention to the fact that people are still dying from starvation, although practically there should be enough food for everyone. Instead of using words, the design features a traditional woodcut technique that immediately gets the message across. Set against a white background, it shows the hands of two people and several symbolic gestures. In one illustration, the hands form the curved shape of a fork; in another one, they show the outlines of Africa, the continent that suffers most from famines. The title of the posters, “Give me a hand”, is thus poignantly visualised and serves as an appeal to cherish food more, avoid massive food wastage and stop throwing away groceries that are still edible – and thereby contribute to tackling the worldwide shortage of food.
Statement by the Jury
The design of this poster series succeeds in getting its message across through a very simple yet poignant design approach. The rough charm of the woodcuts represents an excellent choice because it graphically underlines the difficult situation and existential distress of people suffering from hunger. The colouring also blends consistently into the overall appearance that is limited to simple black and white.
