Gotjawal, Origins of Jeju Island
This hotel garden complex on the South Korean volcanic island of Jeju is entirely inspired by its nature dominated by lava rock, especially the largely untouched Gotjawal Forest. For this purpose, multi-stem trees typical of the region were planted and serve to contrast with a system of modern paved paths and trails. Local volcanic rock forms the ground, shapes wall elements and structures the area in general. The publicly accessible garden is intended as a reinterpretation of the rugged, wild Gotjawal Forest and aims to make its beauty and value tangible.
Statement by the Jury
The Gotjawal landscape garden project called Origins of Jeju Island reinterprets the island’s pristine nature in a compelling way, making it experienceable.
