Uniting Aesthetics and Functionality

IT infrastructure is currently deployed at large scale in two different ways: in vast remote data centres, with decentralised, co-located hardware and on-premise enterprise solutions, where hardware can be managed by the people who use it. Serviceability is a key factor in both scenarios. IBM’s z16 computer system was conceived by industrial designers and development and maintenance experts, and it is designed for easy and intuitive access to the interior. For maintenance work, the focus is on intuitive handling. For instance, the installation of components is ergonomic and achieved without tools, featuring colour-coded touchpoints on removable components like panels and cards. Most maintenance tasks are designed to be completed by one person. Depending on requirements, the z16 is scalable and can be used simultaneously in one to four clusters as a single operating system. Alongside technical performance, the jury was especially enamoured with the design language: “Anyone familiar with IBM’s design history knows that there is a considerable process behind it to achieve consistency in materials and surfaces, especially with the larger units. The z16 model has a very effective and coherent design.” The jury was also impressed with the multifunctional rack covers, which protect the system while promoting air circulation. The coherent design of the z16 not only aligns well with the brand it also balances aesthetics and functionality. Intuitive operation, user friendliness and attention to detail convey a sense of quality and make this industrial product a pleasure to use. “Human interaction and general requirements should always be the starting point for successful design,” the jury noted, praising the product not only as a feat of engineering, but also for its role in improving the user experience. “Its form,” the jury summed up, “is an honest expression of what it is and what it does.”
