Josie and the Whales

“Josie and the Whales” is a multimedia screened book designed to raise awareness of environmental issues among readers aged 8 to 12. Conceived to address current reading practices, the design explores the sensory interface between the portable digital screen, sequential art for print and embedded sounds. It stages an atmospherically intense story with the verbal text replaced by recorded and open-sourced sounds so that readers can “travel” through the story. The device enables readers, through a tap of their fingers, to imaginatively enter into the subject states of the narrative’s animate and inanimate characters.
