Joy

Joy is a rocking chair and a sculptural object that evokes the joyful emotions of a playground. At first, it is not immediately apparent that it is a chair, but once seated, Joy works as a very comfortable and functional rocking chair. The joy of sitting is enhanced with a footrest nook that allows users to keep their feet off the ground. It is also designed for sitting sideways, which adds to the pleasure of chair play and dynamic movement. The overall emphasis is placed on designing all features – from the rocking parts and handles to the seat and footrests – with a continuous, organic curve. Starting from the base, the body of the chair is designed to curve upwards on both sides, ultimately creating grips on both ends; this curvature also naturally forms the sitting area. Visually, this curved form also brings another kind of pleasure that evokes intrigue and thought. How do we know a chair is a chair? What are the perceptual signs that visually characterise a chair?
