Squaring the Circle

Sometimes designers have to throw fundamental principles overboard to rethink everyday products. Designers of the LocknLock Square bid the conventional round shape of pots and pans adieu and created a square surface with vertical sides and rounded corners. This innovative shape not only has an original appearance it also offers a number of functional benefits. First, by forgoing the traditional bulky shape, this cookware maximises the surface area available for cooking, enabling more efficient use of heat from stovetops and induction hobs. Second, pots and pans in this series are easy to stack for efficient use of space in kitchen cupboards. And finally, the square body allows excess fluid to be poured from one of the corners without making a mess. Even the smallest details reflect the designers’ uncompromising commitment to quality: this cookware features a high-quality glass lid with a precise silicone seal to ensure a perfect fit during cooking. The square-rounded knobs provide a secure grip and are positioned at a safe distance from the glass surface for easy use, even with cooking gloves. “The distinctive shape of LocknLock Square is striking, but the combination and craftsmanship of the materials are what stand out most. The soft silicone grips and knobs insulate well, are comfortable to use and create an exciting contrast to the industrial look of the cast aluminium,” the jurors noted. The designers also focused on the product’s appearance, recognising that today’s cookware is often used on the dining table instead of remaining hidden away in the kitchen. The robust aesthetics of the cast aluminium and the balanced proportions of the grips and handles make transferring food to serving bowls a thing of the past, and LocknLock Square can be easily combined with modern tableware. The higher sides of the pots and pans provide advantages, as does one of the most basic properties of the cast material: it stores heat effectively to keep food hot for longer.
