Mahjong Tea combines two Chinese traditions in its design concept: loose tea is pressed into pre-measured mahjong tiles that are stored in characteristic wooden tea boxes. The stackable boxes are decorated with crafted elements and brass inlays; a band with illustrations protects their untreated surface. Organic materials emphasise the product’s character. Together, product and packaging form an aesthetic design object.
Statement by the Jury
Due to the tea’s unusual conversion to traditional mahjong tiles, the product and its aesthetic packaging form a fascinating whole that encourages people to celebrate the joy of drinking tea.
