Few things are as important for our well-being as a good night’s sleep – and that all depends to a great extent on the mattress, which is where things get complicated. Although there are many different types of mattresses offering various zones and degrees of firmness, standard mattress models don’t suit everyone. It’s more of a problem when partners share the same mattress, especially if one is significantly heavier than the other. Mattresses are also closed structures that make it impossible to clean or repair individual components, so when one part becomes damaged, the entire product must be replaced. With these obvious drawbacks in mind, the designers at MAZZU set out to overturn previous assumptions and rethink the pocket spring mattress. MAZZU is an innovative modular system that is durable, sustainable and can be customised to specific user needs. It contains pocket springs covered in fabric sleeves that are interconnected with a simple snap-fit system. This makes it possible to configure softer and firmer zones according to user preferences, and to adapt the mattress size to different bed frames. MAZZU’s components are quickly assembled and disassembled so that the mattress can evolve as life phases and individual needs change. The developers deliberately avoided using foam material. Although often found in mattresses, foam is difficult to recycle, and its relatively high weight makes handling cumbersome, which increases both transportation costs and the carbon footprint. MAZZU is a lightweight mattress with a small pack size and recyclable components. In terms of material choices, the designers favoured polymers and textiles that can be joined together without the need for adhesives. “The open structure simplifies cleaning and damaged part replacement, which extends the product’s overall lifespan,” commented the impressed jury. “MAZZU is a brand-new iteration in mattress design that benefits both consumers and the planet.”
