A place for children

The MOKA Library in the Hyundai Museum of Kids’ Books & Art presents itself as a multilayered project and an atmospherically condensed world of experience. Explicitly designed for children, it creates an exciting place to discover the world of books. This library sees itself as a cultural space that aims to tell stories and encourage children to explore more than 2,000 books with a focus on the theme of nature. True to this basic idea, the inspiring concept has been created as a subtle spatial design that is noticeable in many details. Thus, the bookcases correspond to the height of children, the primary users of the space, and viewed from above, are arranged in the shape of the letter “S”. The children can play around the bookcases and take out books at will. The hosted books are presented in an interior design that allows children to develop their imagination and dreams in an engaging way. The ceiling of the library has been decorated with a wealth of excitingly varied design elements. Shapes reminiscent of human figures, faces and leaves are added as layers under the ceiling, inviting visitors to enter and enjoy the rich world of imagination. In addition to the reading room, the library has two other areas separate from the main space. One serves for hosting exhibitions and the other for organising education programmes.

Statement by the Jury

The MOKA Library, with its soft, flowing forms and low shelves, is truly a place for children. It is a remarkable expression of architecture that can be experienced, conveying energy through its organic lines and colour scheme. Lovingly crafted details such as smileys on the wooden chairs are intended to entertain children and encourage them to play. The human-like shape of the columns underlines the friendly overall impression and further structures the space.
