There is no doubt that functional aspects are a primary focus when creating furniture for public spaces. However, Offecct Circulus is a modular seating group that combines flexibility with durability and has a distinctive signature look. The product designers took the principle of circularity into account over the entire product lifecycle, from material sourcing to assembly and ultimate disposal, also ensuring that the parts are easy to replace. Although these aspects were not explicitly part of the project, they emerged as a cultural aspect during the briefing. As is so often the case, the solution involved the consistent reduction and precise coordination of individual parts. The lightweight aluminium frame serves as the basis for a slender skeletal structure that can be extended to almost any desired length. The three modules – a seat/bench, a mid-height backrest and a high backrest – make a variety of configurations feasible. It is possible to arrange the seats facing each other, while the individual modules can be adapted to create single, double or triple seating arrangements. This flexibility in selecting different widths and heights gives rise to an interesting rhythm, especially with larger ensembles. The designers also developed a perimeter clip to securely fasten the upholstery to the frame without the need for adhesives or tacks. This facilitates any colour combination and the simple replacement of the upholstery. The punched metal sheet of the frame is particularly well conceived for good air circulation, whereas the dense foam padding guarantees a high level of seating comfort. “Offecct Circulus is very unique in terms of its character. The design is incredibly clever and incorporates various inspiring details, such as the recessed legs which give the furniture a floating appearance. This modular seating group is a very flexible solution for public spaces that reflects the principles of circular design,” commented the jury members. And although recyclability is a product feature, the timeless, versatile design of Offecct Circulus means it will remain in use for many years to come.
