Nature’s fleeting scenes, such as rainbows and sun rays, are caused by ‘atmospheric optical phenomena’ produced by moisture in the atmosphere and the sun. By ‘reconstructing’ an optical phenomenon into a space using ‘materials’ and ‘structure’, a new spectacle is created. Located between the Ueno Zoo and the university, the site is distinguished by its biodiverse vegetation and wildlife, and its ability to receive the entire movement of the sun while also allowing the wind to pass through. When the sun shines and the wind blows, light is led into the space from pipes in the ceiling, creating a light phenomenon that resembles droplets falling on the surface of water. Through the medium of space, natural phenomena and scenes are experienced in ways that are familiar to each visitor’s impressions of time and nature. The light shifts with the wind, revealing new sights. This architectural space captures the atmosphere’s seasonal, daily, and time-of-day changes, and the sights vary depending on the time of day.
