Seoul Design Festival NAVER Data Square

The Korean Internet portal NAVER not only provides a wide variety of services for PC and mobile, which can be used in real life, it also acts as an information distribution platform based on searches. This exhibition focused on digital data, which is the company’s core value. The Data Square invited visitors to personally experience the intangible process of how digital data is created, collected and shared, and thus gain a multi-sensory understanding of the virtuous cycle of data through this media art space. Within elaborately constructed walls made of simple wooden slats, impressive interactive animations were projected on all sides enabling visitors to interact and create individual signs that afterwards were collected and displayed together on another wall. Thus, the company underlined the importance of data and its efforts to create the best possible Internet environment by using the virtuous cycle of data, whereas the exhibition provided a fascinating insight into the complexity of the daily data flow.

Statement by the Jury

This exhibition design is outstanding due to the contrast that the walls create between the inside and outside. Attracted by the natural wood construction of the outside, visitors can experience and interact with elaborately animated data landscapes on the inside. This possibility delivers poignant insights into both our contribution to the permanent flow of data and the fact that all our activities on the Internet are being monitored, collected and stored.
