The colourful woven rugs in the Strata collection were created as part of a fruitful collaboration between the traditional carpet manufacturer Rols and the textile design studio Wallace#Sewell. Both are united not only by high-quality standards, but also by an appreciation of traditional craftsmanship, innovative thinking and, not least, a sustainable philosophy. Designed according to the motto “Archive of Earth Memories” by Wallace#Sewell and produced at the Rols weaving mills, these rugs pay homage to our planet’s diverse landscapes and colours. Rols has been using the traditional Wilton knotting technique for more than a century and, over the years, has passed the necessary skills down from one generation to the next. The partners have endeavoured to preserve this special rug-making expertise, while at the same time creating an aesthetic, contemporary look. Vibrant patterns and colours as well as precise workmanship are key building blocks in this process. Rols has a strong commitment to sustainability, which is why energy-efficient production, the use of local yarn processing partners and a considered choice of materials are important priorities. Recycled post-consumer PET bottles are used to create the yarn for eight differently patterned Strata rugs. As a material it is remarkably well-suited for making rugs, even ones with complex patterns, and it offers decisive functional advantages. Thanks to the extreme durability of the innovative yarn and UV treatment, the rugs are perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. “The surface of the Strata rugs feels absolutely natural and soft. They are a pleasure to walk on and meticulously executed. Craftsmanship and functionality have come together here to make a great product,” said the impressed jury. “We were also captivated by the brilliant colours.” This luminosity is typical of designs by Wallace#Sewell, and they add a vibrancy and energy to living spaces. Strata literally weaves together a poetic idea, a dramatic look, an innovative material and meticulous craftsmanship – these rugs represent originality that is both beautiful and functional.
