The poster for the 2016 annual exhibition of the University of Applied Arts Vienna reflects on the European refugee crisis. By showing a pair of wire cutters against the background of the Austrian national colours, the poster alludes to the great number of migrants travelling through Austria in 2015. The vertical position of the tool is reminiscent of a human figure, while its function symbolises the cutting of fences. In the context of the exhibition, the eye-catching motif also points to the initial letter “A” of the university’s informal name (“Angewandte”).
