Poster Series
Thirty-Seven
In Chinese, many words sound the same. Some of these sets of words, also called homophones, are illustrated in this poster series using colourful graphics, thus giving non-native speakers an idea of Chinese pronunciation in a tongue-in-cheek way. Banana and intersection, for instance, are homophones, both pronounced “xiang-jioa”. The poster shows two bananas that are intertwined in order to symbolise the meaning of “intersection”. The words depicted in the posters are also printed in English and Chinese characters including their phonetic transcription, supplementing each poster.
