Zumtobel Annual Report 2009/10

The annual report by Zumtobel AG is subdivided into chapters on the main enterprise and its three daughter companies. The latter are each defined through different neon colours, a systematic design element that extends from the rubber bands strapped around the cover to the bookmarks and the design details of the book. The alternating colour scheme is complemented by a reduced approach in layout and typography: the distinctive font is used in one single type only, yet is allowed to vary in size. Full-page photographs and portraits of artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Zaha Hadid and James Turrell underline the expressive persuasiveness of this distinctively designed annual report and communicate the company as one of the leading manufacturers of lighting, as well as a science and technology leader and partner of international architects, light planners and artists. At first sight, its imposing cloth-bound format seems a bit too grand for an annual report and seems to make little sense in our digital age. However, the excellent quality shown in the images, typography, printing technique and the entire processing illustrates that this report delivers something that goes way beyond what digital communication can offer and communicate – it embodies an ideal merging of format, beauty and tactile pleasure.«
