Red Dot Design Award celebrates: 1,200 international guests attend award ceremony in Essen, Germany

On 20 June 2022, the winners of this year's Red Dot Award: Product Design were honoured for their achievements. Almost 1,200 guests from around 40 nations accepted the invitation of the Red Dot Design Award – among them design greats such as Sean Carney (Philips), Flavio Manzoni (Ferrari), Roland Heiler (Studio F. A. Porsche), Peter Schreyer (Hyundai Motor Group) and Stephan Niehaus (Hilti).

Red Dot Gala at the Essen Opera House

The Red Dot Gala in the Aalto Theatre marked the start of the festive day. After a brilliant opening it was clear: the Red Dot Design Award has not forgotten how to celebrate award ceremonies.

The evening was hosted by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, Founder and CEO of Red Dot. For him it is clear: “Everyone was excited and tense after two years without a live event. But the many happy faces you could look into that evening showed that it was a more than successful comeback of our award ceremony. I would like to thank all the guests for travelling, some of them very long distances, to be there live again. The atmosphere was fantastic throughout the day.”

Together with the Red Dot jurors Guto Indio da Costa, Annette Lang and Gordon Bruce, Peter Zec handed over the trophies to the winners of the Red Dot: Best of the Best, who enjoyed their moment on stage to the applause of the guests.

The Aalto Ballet provided an entertaining intermission with a performance of an excerpt from the piece “Percussion” by Ben Van Cauwenbergh and Armen Hakobyan, in which a battle of the genders was creatively staged.

The grand finale of the Red Dot Gala was the presentation of the “Radius” challenge trophy, which officially crowned the Red Dot: Design Team 2022. Roland Heiler, Managing Director of Studio F. A. Porsche, presented the trophy to Sean Carney, Chief Experience Design Officer Royal Philips. The Philips Experience Design Team led by Sean Carney celebrated on stage with around 40 employees in a golden shower of confetti.

Designers’ Night at the Red Dot Design Museum – party until dawn

Following the gala, the Designers’ Night invited guests to the Red Dot Design Museum Essen. In the best weather, people relaxed in and around the beer garden, shook a leg to the sounds of Chrissi D! and enjoyed a fine selection of food and drinks. The special feature: during the after-show party, the winners had the opportunity to discover their award-winning products in one of the three special exhibitions in the museum. They were thus the first guests to visit “Milestones in Contemporary Design” and “Design on Stage”. The third exhibition was specially created by the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year and is entitled “A life of design. Designing for life. – Philips Experience Design”.

The award-winning vehicles were also on display exclusively for the evening of the awards ceremony. Away from the party hustle and bustle, they could be examined in a separate hall. Among them was the extraordinary Ferrari model “Daytona SP3”, of which only 599 were produced.
