Red Dot: What makes the digital Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K film camera, stand out? 

Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K has the potential to fundamentally transform the way in which film and episodic serials are created. With built-in high-capacity cloud store technology and ultra-fast data transfer, it offers remote studios, on-set editors and colour graders simultaneous real-time access to footage the instant it is shot. 

Blackmagic Design products are immediately recognisable as such. What role does a consistent design language play and how do you manage to implement it so successfully?

Our products cover many different segments of the video production industry and are designed for a multitude of functions, user groups and usage contexts. Rather than attempting to create a singular visual narrative, products are instead united through their inherent properties. The brand is thus reflected through physical traits such as materials, finishes and internal structures, along with key touchpoints like latches, buttons and connections.

What characterises your approach to product development?

Design is a key part of our development process. It is leveraged at every stage – across disciplines, collaboratively and fluidly – to deliver carefully considered solutions. Hardware and software are developed in unison, informing each other in a dynamic fashion in order to create consistent, memorable experiences across a wide range of categories.
