Red Dot: What target group did you have in mind when designing the EOS R1?
The Canon EOS R1 is designed with professional photographers in mind. Specifically, it is tailored to photographers working in fields such as sports, journalism and wildlife photography. The camera’s high-speed continuous shooting capabilities and advanced autofocus features make it ideal for reliably and precisely capturing fast-moving subjects.
The jury was impressed by the usability and the ergonomic design of the camera. Can you tell us more about this?
The ergonomic design of the EOS R1 is the result of continuous ongoing development, perfected over many years. The increase in functions brings with it an increasing number of buttons. We have meticulously refined their positions, shapes and angles to make them comfortable to operate and prevent finger and hand fatigue. Specifically, we finely adjusted the angle and surrounding design of the vertical release button to make the vertical and horizontal shooting experience as similar as possible. Additionally, a new grip pattern ensures a secure grip and optimal control.
What role does the quality of seduction play in the design of such a camera?
While professional cameras often focus on functionality, aesthetic and sensual values are not to be underestimated. An attractive design enhances user motivation and enjoyment of their work. For professionals, using beautiful tools signifies reliability and expertise, fulfilling their desire to own an object that is of particular value.
