Red Dot: Offecct Circulus is intended to be used in public areas and office environments. What are the essential features of the system?
We wanted to achieve a new look that is as highly recognisable as it is stunning. Naturally, function was another important consideration. We aimed to create an object with a simple yet unmistakable signature. Circularity also played an important role in the design process, and this aspect is deeply embedded in the company’s DNA.
To what extent did your choice of materials support the principle of circular design?
We took an unconventional approach to our selection of materials and structures that was aligned to the clear and simple geometry of the Offecct Circulus silhouette. Our desire to engineer a solid yet lightweight frame that would be easy to assemble prompted us to choose aluminium. Recyclability was another important factor in the decision process. The metal sheet is reinforced using a punching technique that also ensures good air circulation.
Which detail do you consider to be your biggest achievement? And which aspect did you work on for the longest time?
I am completely in love with the die-cast parts, which were conceived with exceptional functional clarity for the backrest and armrests. In general, though, meticulous care and dedication went into so many details. Six different variants – with various punching depths, designs and dimensions – were tested for the aluminium structure before a decision was made. The upholstery fastening system, which uses a universal clip and requires no staples or glue, is another impressive feature. And last but not least, the legs are set back under the seat – a small detail that gives the sofa extra stability and a light, floating appearance.
