Red Dot: What detail of the AMP-44R amplifier are you particularly proud of and why?

One such detail is how modern design meets traditional artisanry on the front panel. Each component is precisely machined to the highest standards. Yet the central control knob of the amplifier is meticulously hand-finished by a renowned lacquer artist. This element adds a visibly human and tactile quality to the overall design, subtly breaking the modernist aesthetic in an inspiring and unexpected way.

Where do functionality and aesthetics come together most clearly in the design of an amplifier?

Traditionally, amplifiers had to be larger to house the most important parts, that are also big and heavy, along with bulky, hard-edged heat sinks. The AMP-44R is slim and compact because its bigger and taller components are protruding from underneath the base. This is both functional and visually appealing. For increased user-friendliness, we chose a single control knob finished with a soft-touch, traditional Korean lacquer instead of adding multiple buttons.

What trends and developments are you currently observing in your sector?

We’ve noticed that audio manufacturers have been reissuing previous models in line with the growing popularity of “retro” aesthetics. Some companies led by engineers focus exclusively on internal circuits and engineering. As design is just as important as the quality of electronics and sound, I believe high-end audio manufacturers, especially smaller boutique manufacturers like us, must strive to be unique, creative and innovative – rather than playing it safe with proven design trends.
