Red Dot: How did you come up with the idea for Furniture Linoleum?
Our primary focus has always been the development of exceptional floor coverings. At the same time, we are constantly endeavouring to expand and diversify our indoor design portfolio and expertise, and we saw an opportunity to make innovative products in a complementary area. The result was Furniture Linoleum, a sustainable and versatile material that was specifically created for furniture applications. Like our range of floor coverings, Furniture Linoleum is made from natural raw materials such as linseed oil, wood flour, pine resin and limestone, and it offers an eco-friendly alternative to conventional synthetic materials.
Can you tell us more about the sustainable qualities of the material?
Linoleum is a climate-positive material. This means that the plants used to make it absorb more carbon dioxide than is emitted in the production and transportation process. Made from 94 per cent natural raw materials, it is climate-positive from the cradle to the factory gate, which renders carbon offsetting unnecessary. The material also has an authentic external appearance and a distinctive, natural feel. The new Pure Linoleum decor, which is completely free of colour pigments, showcases the colour of linseed oil and underlines these unique natural properties.
Are natural materials a current interior design trend anyway?
The construction industry, once driven by non-organic materials, is currently facing the environmental consequences of its own rapid growth. Architects know that natural materials play a key role in the transition to a sustainable future. Inspired by nature, organic materials are heralding a new era of healthier and more eco-friendly products.
