Interview with Peter Ameloot

Red Dot: The jury was very impressed by the super-compact design and simple shape of the Polesano Bollard. What inspired you?

We aimed to create a clear link with the larger, already existing pole-top Polesano luminaire, which was also designed together with SKIRA lighting. As DELTALIGHT, we stand for “the unexpected detail”, which led us to position the light head next to the body of the fixture – resulting in a recognisable yet distinctive design, offering a subtle twist on a familiar form.

The bollard luminaire offers nature-centric lighting. Can you tell us a bit more about it?

The luminaire has a nature-centric lighting version, which allows it to be dimmed to a point where the LEDs emit no more blue light. The resulting red light reduces light pollution and helps preserve the natural biorhythm of both humans and animals. With this approach, we aim to restore darkness to the night sky in the most straightforward way possible – without the need for complex programming. Simply dimming the fixture to 75 per cent triggers the transition from 3,000 kelvin to red light.

What other quality aspects were important?

With this bollard light, we wanted to set new standards in every respect, without compromising on aesthetics. The fixture achieves high ratings for both water and impact resistance (IP67 and IK10), while maintaining an elegant appearance. Thanks to the LED/lens combination, fixtures can be spaced up to 10 metres apart, using less power than comparable solutions. These two factors combined allow for energy savings of up to 35 per cent. In our view, the quality of the light itself is also part of design quality and that is one of the defining strengths of this luminaire.
