Red Dot: The modular construction of the MAZZU mattress is very unusual. What advantages does it have?
Mattresses are usually large and bulky. Also, if something breaks – for example, if the foam is damaged or a spring snaps – then the entire mattress has to be replaced because everything is interconnected. This is both wasteful and inefficient. In this modular system, the mattress is divided up into smaller, interchangeable components. So if a problem occurs – at the centre, in a corner or on the edge – the mattress can be opened and the damaged module replaced. This design permits greater flexibility. The mattress can be adapted to any bed frame, refreshed and even customised to have different degrees of firmness on each side to suit individual needs.
What hurdles did you need to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges was to create a connection system that was both robust and easy to use. We spent a great deal of time developing connector prototypes and testing their strength to establish their suitability for long-term use, but also to ensure that they could be easily assembled and disassembled by people without specialised tools or expertise.
