Interview with Kai Funke

Red Dot: What was your inspiration for X?

X is the result of an intensive involvement with lightweight structures. An examination of structural architecture principles and the design of light, highly efficient muscle-powered vehicles played a major role in the creation of this reduced, intelligent and symbolic table frame. In a world that is characterised by AI, designing products with your hands and mind – a process with almost archaic connotations – offers the best conditions for consistent product development.

To what extent does the carefully considered design support function?

As with many classic modernist designs, it is difficult to separate construction and function in such a condensed form. In the ideal scenario, design equates to function. But lines and composition certainly also play an important role. The option of creating a row of tables with X enhances its functional relevance and the modular design permits an optimised packaging concept.

Is a return to tried and tested forms sometimes the key to creating contemporary furniture?

That hits the nail on the head for me. Many iconic designs were created for honest and authentic reasons. This retrospective approach also has something to do with the fact that, historically, the development of new products was focused less on commercial considerations and more on the desire to aesthetically and functionally improve the world. Designing timeless and successful products that turn out to be the mainstays of the companies that make them is hopefully still an aspiration that many designers have today. Perhaps, in our day and age, we should be focusing on developing products that are popular for both their practicality and their broad affordability.
