With the sense of good communication design and creativity: the jury 2017 (part 3)

The heart of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design is the jury. With its expertise, it assesses thousands of submissions each year on the basis of established criteria. In 2017, there are 24 globally recognised experts who meet in Essen, Germany, to jointly decide in a multi-day process about the awarding of the coveted label “Red Dot”. Some of these experts are repeatedly part of the jury. Among others Shu Chang Kung, Renne Angelvuo, Seung Hun Yoo and Jean Jacques Schaffner will select the winners of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017.

Expert for architecture
Professor Shu-Chang Kung studied architecture and design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design first before setting up "AURA Architects & Associates" in 1997 in Taipei. In 2011 and 2012 he was the leading curator for the Taipei Pavilion at the Shenzhen Bi-City Biennial of Urbanism / Architecture. Currently, he is an associate professor and director at the Graduate Institute of Architecture at National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. About his profession, Shu-Chang Kung likes the challenge he faces the most: the need to response various problems, such as changes in climate and energy, the generation gap and social justice. In his opinion, an architect has to face the duality of architecture and nature in different scales, materials and environmental situations.

Marketing expert from the north
Juror Renne Angelvuo shares less with architecture, but especially with marketing. The Finn studied advertising, marketing and design at the Institute of Marketing in Helsinki. Since 1980, he has been working as an art director in advertising and design. In 1994, he launched the company “Priority Advertising & Design”, and in 2004 set up “Win Win Branding”, today called “Win Win Packaging”. Renne Angelvuo has years of expertise in packaging design, industrial design, branding and packaging innovations. He describes the typical Finnish design as minimalistic, aesthetic and functional.

Industrial engineer and User Experience expert
Professor Dr Seung Hun Yoo is the founder of the “CO:UX Design Lab” at the School of Art & Design at Korea University. He holds a master’s degree in design and a PhD in industrial engineering. He has worked at Samsung Mobile among others and designed many of Samsung’s flagship mobile handsets. After seven years of working as UX Director at Samsung’s Korea headquarters and at design offices in the USA, he began working at Korea University in cognitive UX design research studies and education in 2012. Seung Hun Yoo and his team are currently conducting cross-disciplinary UX design projects such as transparent UX display design, medical UX design and next-generation wearable devices. His favorite brand is Tesla, as it has not only made it into the pole position of the electric cars, but also because they have reshaped the automobile industry and even gone beyond that.

Swiss look for design quality
Juror Jean Jacques Schaffner is no stranger to the world of design as well. After his study of graphic design in Basel and training courses for being a TV music director as well as a photographer and different study visits in Paris, London, San Fransico and Utah, he finally founded his first company in 1979. "Schaffner & Conzelmann Designersfactory" in Basel is a full-service communication and design agency, one of the most renowned agencies in Switzerland. Jean Jacques Schaffner has been active as Red Dot Juror for many years. For him, the most critical moment is to understand the actual message of the design in the context of the task and to ask oneself again and again why this special form language or that particular medium was used for it.
