Momkai — An Audio App for Noise-Cancelling Journalism

The strategic design studio Momkai is a co-founder of De Correspondent, a journalism platform that does without flash-in-the-pan headlines in order to more deeply engage with the world. This independent, ad-free medium offers its members in-depth articles and insights from around the world. Now an audio app has been developed to accompany the website.

Interview with Momkai

Red Dot: De Correspondent was launched some years ago. How has the platform developed in recent years?
Momkai: According to the British Press Gazette, it is now the third-largest membership-based journalism platform in the world after The Guardian and Die Zeit. With over 70,000 members, De Correspondent represents a new kind of journalism that eschews media hype in favour of writing in-depth articles.

What inspired you to develop an app for audio content?
Firstly, we want to disseminate our journalism as widely as possible while also providing greater convenience for our members. Given that podcasts are becoming ever more popular, we wanted to offer a user-friendly and interactive service. Secondly, by developing a proprietary app, we are protecting our members’ privacy, as the platform is ad-free and tracking-free. And last but not least, we want to be independent of existing audio platforms.

How did you forge the visual link between the app and the existing website?
All the avatars, the bold colours and the vibrant showcase illustrations correlate with the visual language our members are familiar with from the platform. This creates a smooth and coherent experience for all our listeners.
