Brise-Vent Havre Harbor Museum

Back Download

This 31,000-square-metre project transforms a historic structure into a museum with exhibition, workshop, auditorium, and conference spaces. Inspired by swimmers diving and ascending, the design features an iconic extended curved roof. A central plaza dividing the roof creates a social and cultural hub for visitors. Strategically placed apertures bring natural light and ventilation below ground, blending indoors and outdoors. Below, an undulating underground space echoes the roof, offering flexible exhibition areas and engaging museum experiences. Serving as a grand observation platform, the new roof offers panoramic views of Le Havre's harbour while integrating seamlessly with the existing structure. Beneath it, a rhythmic arrangement of walls mirrors the original building's openings, while a dock for ferries reinforces the site's connection to the city. Linear exhibition spaces are organised under the original curved roof to honour the historic structure. Enclosed by a sculptural, wave-like wall, these spaces reflect the maritime context, enhance monumentality, and connect to the underground gallery. Sustainability is central to the design. Rooftop greenery and a landscaped plaza promote energy efficiency and regulate the microclimate. Blending historical significance with contemporary innovation, the museum embodies Le Havre's future — uniting heritage with an evolving urban identity.
