DSLRUOK?

Traditional DSLR camera ergonomics are optimised for still photography but are inadequate for video work due to awkward control placement and insufficient grip areas. DSLRUOK takes inspiration from professional cinema camera rigs, offering a more substantial and adjustable handgrip to increase stability. Frequently used controls are placed on the grip for easy access and occasional one-handed camera operation. Current camera controls force users to push individual buttons to change various settings, masking their relationships to each other and hiding the true nature of the different settings. For example, exposure is a function of three settings: shutter speed, aperture size, and sensitivity (ISO). Users should be able to navigate these settings and balance them smoothly and seamlessly for the greatest artistic effect. DSLRUOK proposes a trackball that allows users to navigate aperture and shutter speed simultaneously, surrounded by a jog dial that adjusts ISO. Now, one thumb can smoothly control a formerly complicated and broken interaction. DSLRUOK does not have its own LCD screen by default. This prevents chimping—an obsessive checking of the screen after every photograph—which can cause photographers to miss photo opportunities. When a screen is required, DSLRUOK pairs with a smartphone (via WiFi) that is mounted to the camera body. Phone screens are larger than most camera LCDs and are ideally suited to this purpose. A paired smartphone also offers convenient file transfer capabilities, image and video editing, and connection to social media. DSLRUOK further substitutes the familiar camera 'hot shoe' accessory attachment point in favour of standardised USB ports distributed around the camera body.
