Eight Infernal Generals

This colour illustration depicts masks with traditional patterns as they are worn by the Eight Infernal Generals, who are part of a special Taiwanese folk tradition. According to folk belief, the Eight Infernal Generals fight all evil forces, sins and plagues and bring a blessing instead. The dominant colours of this illustration are red and blue. The special symbols on the mask were drawn in fine lines. The black ink used pays homage to Chinese drawing traditions and conveys power.
