“Expend” portrays the human tendency to exploit natural resources for petty desires. Without a sign of remorse, the protagonist of the film kills a stag. He uses the heart of the animal for a machine which generates electricity for his house. The energy, however, is consumed immediately, so the man sets off for the next raid. The medium of stop-motion chosen for this animation complements the viewer’s emotions, communicating the stirring message with pictures that are tactile and tangible. The story is accentuated by a dense, atmospheric setting and corresponding sounds.
