“Good design does not dominate. It earns trust by being quietly intelligent,” says Axel Meyer, Head of Nokia Product Design. A guiding principle that applies especially to the sensitive realm of surveillance technology – and that has been put into practice to impressive effect in the Nokia 5G 360 Camera. The aim of the design was not to draw attention to the technology but to create a form that discreetly supports its function. Equipped with 360-degree camera technology, 5G connectivity and built-in Nokia RXRM software, it sets new standards for real-time video streaming while, impressively, featuring a consistently restrained design. The principle of reduction is discernible in every single detail of the design – from the dark grey surface which makes dirt less visible but still has an appealingly commanding aesthetic, to industrial-grade 5G connectivity without protruding antennae or fragile parts. With its concise, pared-back form, the surveillance camera unobtrusively blends in with industrial as well as public settings. It is also surprisingly light and compact and thus easy to install or relocate. The camera’s clean, function-focused design reflects its extraordinary durability and longevity. The dust-tight and waterproof chassis of the Nokia 5G 360 Camera proves its worth even in the harshest conditions – from mining tunnels to wildfire zones. Owing to its shock- and vibration-resistant construction, the camera is moreover suitable for mobile use on vehicles, ships or unmanned aerial systems. Replaceable protective lens covers simplify maintenance and extend the service life of the product. The jury was fascinated and paid tribute to the “quiet intelligence” of this surveillance solution. “The successful combination of functionality and reticence makes the design of the Nokia 5G 360 Camera particularly alluring. From the technical inner workings and the resilient casing to the brackets and packaging, everything has been thought of and harmoniously designed down to the last detail. This is a genuine high-end product presented in a seductively simple form.”
