Smart and sustainable packaging

Protecting network technology components well during transport, enabling easy handling and helping to avoid unnecessary packaging waste – these were the requirements for the newly designed packaging system. Nokia realised these goals with a packaging that follows a “zero waste” maxim. The entire interaction of the transport chain was analysed in terms of its usability and every detail was taken into account, from ergonomic user guidance and waste management to cost and volume efficiency. The aim was to develop a sustainable and effective system that also facilitates the work of installers and minimises impact and damage to equipment. Simplified and streamlined for this purpose, the packaging kit consists of fully organic fibres, including tapes, bands and core damping elements. The base material used, FiberFlute, with its distinctive, stable yet resilient corrugated structure, provides a sustainable cushioning solution with excellent damping performance based on 100 per cent recycled paper. To protect the components until they reach their final destination, the packaging system is built up of several layers and printed with symbols as quick guide tutorial actions – delivering a transport protection that combines reliability and environmental responsibility.

Statement by the Jury

Well-thought-out down to the last detail, it combines simple handling with quality of use and durability as well as with an aesthetic that convincingly expresses the implied sense of responsibility.
