In good shape: awarded bikes and matching accessories

With Canyon Bicycles, the honorary title “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year” was awarded for the first time in 2017 to a design team in the bicycle industry. But not only Canyon bikes convince the jury – other manufacturers were also honored for their outstanding design achievements this year. From elegant everyday companions to sporty triathlon and mountain bikes to electric bicycles – design orientated bike enthusiasts can make a find among the award-winning designs of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018.

Comfortable everyday bike

The stylish bike “Gustav” from Schindelhauer Bikes convinces with a clear design idiom and coherent elements. Its aluminium front rack does not swivel out but is firmly connected to the frame, allowing heavier objects to be carried safely and without influencing the driving performance. Furthermore, the specially developed strap system ensures a flexible and safe transportation. The innovative frame geometry, featuring a longer head tube and shorter stem, promotes a comfortable cycling position. Thanks to the wider tyres, uneven roads and streets can be mastered easily. In addition, the lightning is neatly built into the Curana fenders.

“The design of Gustav impressively combines a modern appearance with a tangible sense of tradition. The clear and balanced design language appeals especially to users who are looking for practical simplicity and good performance to complement their lifestyle. This bike is highly functional in everyday life. With its innovative frame geometry comprising a longer head tube and shorter stem, as well as wider tyres, it offers a maximum of comfort even on rough roads,” says the Red Dot Jury about the bicycle, which was awarded a Red Dot: Best of the Best.

Sporty companion

Those who prefer a sporty ride can rely on the Red Dot awarded triathlon bike “Cervélo P5X” from Cervélo Cycles. It has a spectacular frame shape and and has neither a seat tube nor any seat stays. Beyond that, the bike features disc brakes, which are controlled by a hydraulic pipe. Important items can be stored in the Smartpak, Stealthbox and Speedcase components. After more than 180 hours of wind tunnel testing in a full Ironman setup, the bike is aerodynamically an average three watts faster than the predecessor model, making it ideal for the competition.

Dynamic electric bicycle

For anyone who wants to cover long distances without a car, an electric bicycle is just the right choice. The e-bike “Pininfarina E-Voluzione“ from Diavelo, designed by Diavelo and Protanium, convinces with leading edge technology, excellent riding comfort and outstanding design. It weights around 18 kg and has a motor with 250 watts, making it the perfect companion for long trips. The main components, as the battery, the lighting system, the wiring and the motor, blend in elegantly with the bike’s appearance. It was therefore awarded with the sought-after Red Dot.

Essentials for the bike trip

The optimal bicycle has been found. For the next bike trip, the right accessories are needed. With the bicycle carrier “Thule UpRide” from Thule, the bike can easily be brought to the destination, as it ensures a quick and safe installation of bicycles of different sizes or bikes with carbon frames. They are fixed with a hook on the front wheel and can be transported upright, thus the carrier does not come in contact with the frame. To store food and beverages securely, the waterproof “Norco Kinsley City Bag”, manufactured by ASISTA Teile fürs Rad and designed by Martina Stauber from Paula-D Design, is the ideal companion for long bike trips. Through the combination of lifestyle and design with sophisticated manufacturing and functionality, the bag is not only in the city a real eye-catcher. The hydration backpack “Thule Vital”, also from Thule, on the contrary, is perfectly suited for sporty trips. Thanks to the ReTrakt hose return system, the hands remain free and the cyclist can drink while riding. Provisions, clothing or tools can be stored in the practical patch pockets, thus they are quickly accessible without removing the backpack. The helmet “Fend One” from FEND, ensures security. During the break, it can be folded to one third of its size and stowed conveniently in a bag.
