Ken-Tsai Lee Design Lab — See and Be Seen

Ken Tsai Lee Design Lab was founded by Ken Tsai Lee in Taipei, Taiwan in 2012. As designer, curator and associate professor at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Ken Tsai Lee not only tries to do more than just provide commercial services and cater to clients. In his office, which he describes as a lab, he also writes about and discusses design issues at large. Above all, though, he experiments with design. In other words, he sounds out the depths of new design opportunities and methods. He has won multiple awards for the unconventional, daring work he has thus produced. Just as important to him as being noticed for his work is observing other people and going out of his comfort zone to gain new perspectives.en.

Ken Tsai Lee Design Lab interviewed by Red Dot

Red Dot: The now award-winning campaign for D&AD made the jurors smile – how important is humour and a certain degree of anarchy in design?
Ken Tsai Lee Design Lab: The purpose of presenting the D&AD exhibition is not only to let young designers and students see the top international design works. The most important thing is to integrate the international exhibition into the region, by combining the design with regional characteristics, such as, in this case, the fruit that Taiwan produces, to express the link between international and local design. Creativity is important for design, as people are exposed to many visual impressions in their daily lives, but the visual that will really stay in their mind must have certain characteristics, such as humorous creativity.
