Red Dot Award: Product Design

With ease to success: Canyon Bicycles in the Red Dot Award 2022

“Pure Cycling” is the slogan of the Canyon Design Team. The bicycle manufacturer from Koblenz was awarded the honorary title "Red Dot: Design Team of the Year" in 2017. The designs of the Direct 2 Consumer brand are characterised by clear lines and edges, a lightweight construction and a high degree of system integration. With the claim of "best in class", the designers do their utmost to create innovative novelties and to question the tried and tested. This approach pays off. In 2022, the bicycle manufacturer won three awards in the product design competition. Twice with the highest award, the Red Dot: Best of the Best.

Commuter:ON 8 LTD - Urban flexibility

Canyon has been focusing on urban mobility since it was founded in 1985. The Commuter:ON 8 LTD e-city bike is specially designed with this in mind. Its main purpose is to encourage commuters to switch from car to bike. With its stable aluminium frame, it is one of the lightest in its class. The heart of the bike is the Fazua motor. With its low weight, it nevertheless offers enough torque and range, and thanks to its clear design, it still takes up little space.

The Red Dot jury found the clear, concise design and the balanced proportions to be the bike's most outstanding features. The combination of design and material quality led them to award the Commuter:ON 8 LTD bike the highest competition award, the Red Dot: Best of the Best.

Exhibition in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen

The current studio exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum Essen also deals with urban mobility. In addition to a wide variety of bicycle models, accessories such as helmets, lights and backpacks can also be found here. The Canyon Design Team did not miss the opportunity to admire their own award-winning bikes as exhibits during a visit to the museum. “Seeing our products exhibited in the Red Dot Museum does not mark the end point of our participation in the competition for us, but challenges us even more,” reports Christian Hellmann, Lead Graphic Designer at Canyon.

Sebastian Hahn and Peter Kettenring are responsible for the design of the Spectral 125. They report: “It is something special when our work is first awarded a Red Dot: Best of the Best and then exhibited in the additional special exhibition on the subject of bicycles and mobility. We are very pleased to be part of this exhibition and to have our work honoured in such a way.”

Driving fun: Spectral 125

Also on display in the exhibition is the “Spectral 125” mountain bike. The trail bike is designed to do one thing above all: be fun. This requires good climbing characteristics in rough terrain as well as high manoeuvrability, lightness and agility on steep descents. To achieve this, ergonomics, control and performance intertwine with the design of the Canyon Spectral 125 to form a well-balanced unit. The new model follows the corporate philosophy of minimalism and functionalism. In its striking design language, it is also clearly recognisable as part of the Spectral family.

The Red Dot Jury: “Graceful and agile”

The Jury of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2022 is particularly impressed by the graceful, nuanced frame geometry of the Spectral 125. “The fact that it is particularly light and highly stable at the same time is the outstanding achievement of the ingenious design with specially developed chassis and material combinations. The trail bike thus offers sophisticated performance and meets the requirements of its target group,” the judges added.
