Red Dot: An innovative natural fibre composite was used for Light Shed Linen. What are its advantages?

Natural fibre-reinforced polypropylene (NFPP) offers several advantages. Firstly, our linen material is exceptionally environmentally friendly because it is sourced from the flax plant, a very fast-growing and hardy plant that only needs rainwater to thrive and requires neither pesticides nor fertilisers, which protects the soil and groundwater. This alone significantly reduces the product’s carbon footprint. The material is also very lightweight, which makes it more efficient to transport. Last, but not least, it can be 100 per cent recycled through hydropulping, a process that uses only water to break down and separate the natural polypropylene fibres.

To what extent was the material also a design element?

The linen material evokes a sense of being connected with nature – with the simple things in life. It is an expression of deceleration and reflects timelessly valuable knowledge. This affinity with nature is underscored by the lighting feature, which follows the natural rhythm of the day. The biophilic design approach aims to create a natural progression of lighting scenarios that promote well-being and harmony in the surrounding space.

The luminaire can be used as a stand-alone solution or in a configuration. Was this flexibility an important criterion?

Absolutely. Flexibility was a key element in the design of Light Shed Linen. Thanks to its modular design, the luminaire can easily adapt to different spatial configurations and perform specific lighting tasks. This versatility allows interior designers to create a customised lighting architecture that optimises aesthetics and the functionality of spaces.
