Red Dot: What was your biggest challenge in the development of the nwm ONE?

It was particularly challenging to communicate both our unique PSZ technology and the innovative form of the open-ear headphones via the design. We wanted people to immediately know that this product is special, yet at the same time to recognise it as a pair of headphones. Early on in the design process, we worked very freely and produced a number of unusual-looking models. However, we quickly realised that if we deviated too far from the norm when it came to people’s perception of headphones, they would struggle to comprehend the product or integrate it into their everyday lives. That’s why we opted for a relatively conventional shape but eliminated the typical earpads.

The design is very purist. How important are aesthetics for you?

nwm ONE is a tech product with a defined functionality that integrates essential features to perform specific tasks. It is certainly true that everyday life can be enriched with decorative elements, and even I appreciate this on occasion. As a designer, however, I enjoy creating essential beauty by achieving perfect arrangements of elements and form. I want everyone to be able to experience this kind of beauty.

What feedback have you received?

The feedback has been very positive. Users are initially surprised by the look, and then by the superior sound quality. After using the headphones for a while, many people report that it feels as if they were wearing nothing at all.

What do you like best about the headphones themselves?

What I like most are the two concentric circles visible when looking at them from the side. These shapes are very symbolic. They represent the personal sound environment and the coexistence with our surroundings.
