Red Dot: What was your inspiration for the design of the Osuu Chair?

The design evolved gradually over time. We drew inspiration from the informal character of traditional wooden chairs. Much of the process was driven by an exploration of materials and finding out how we could use them in a way that feels both refined and expressive.

In addition to the flowing shape, the jury was impressed by the seating comfort of the chair. How did you achieve this?

Comfort was fundamental from the outset. The Osuu Chair went through rigorous ergonomic testing to ensure maximum comfort. All of our projects are based on an iterative process of prototyping and production – refining them through trial and error, digital modelling and physical craftsmanship. This way, we ensure that our designs are not only aesthetically refined but also engineered for real-world applications.

What is your definition of design quality?

Design quality not only becomes apparent in how the end product looks, but over the course of the entire design process. At Foster + Partners, our approach is very hands-on, refining every detail and ensuring that the final product looks and feels good and performs well – and will continue to do so for years to come. The studio’s work on architectural projects takes place alongside direct commissions from manufacturers, demonstrating the “design by making” approach that runs through every project. All products are designed based on a comprehensive understanding of the materials and manufacturing techniques.
