Red Dot: The jury praised the formal reduction of the MB241 Linerless Industrial Thermal Label Printer. How important is the principle of simplicity in a product as complex as this – and for product design in general?

The principle of simplicity plays a vital role in the design of complex products like the MB241 Linerless Industrial Thermal Label Printer. A clean and minimalist design not only enhances the product’s visual appeal but also directly improves usability, making daily operation more intuitive and user-friendly. The simplicity of the structure also allows for easier cleaning, which is especially important for linerless print applications that require frequent maintenance. The modular and simplified internal layout also significantly reduces the effort required for servicing and repairs, thus improving customer service efficiency. In essence, a simplified design ensures that the product is not only efficient and reliable, but also easy to maintain and operate throughout its life cycle.

To what extent are products such as industrial label printers, which are primarily intended for use in demanding work environments, influenced by aesthetic considerations? 

Aesthetics may play a secondary role in industrial equipment, but they are still important for products such as industrial label printers. A clean, streamlined exterior allows the printer to blend in seamlessly with various work environments, and the fact that they are not visually distracting supports their functional integration. The use of darker colours furthermore enhances the product’s resistance to visible marks and signs of wear, ensuring that it continues to look professional and durable even under challenging conditions and in unclean environments.
