In 2016, the Turkish government strongly opposed and took action against critical media in its own country. Many journalists were dismissed and some of them even imprisoned, including the author Ahmet Altan and Murat Sabuncu, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet, Turkey’s largest opposition newspaper. In order to raise awareness of the situation in Turkey and to sensitise the German public to the issue, the Reporters Without Borders organisation decided to launch a guerrilla campaign in front of the Turkish embassy in Berlin. For this purpose, specially prepared packages with current daily newspapers were dropped off in front of the embassy’s doorsteps. The cover pages featured portraits of incarcerated journalists. Additional packing tape was used to wrap up the newspapers, aimed at symbolising the fact that the journalists pictured are actually behind bars and thus place more urgency on the intended message: “Free press. Free people.”
