Red Dot: The shapes of the GROHE SPA Icon 3D collection are very delicate and suggest a challenging development and production process. Can you talk a bit about this?
The collection is made using advanced 3D metal printing technology, or rather, selective laser sintering (SLS), a process that involves melting a bed of stainless-steel powder specially developed by GROHE with a laser. Each component is composed of more than 4,000 layers, giving it high forging strength. This process allows for the creation of precise, ultra-thin and complex shapes that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional manufacturing methods.
What user experience does the line of bathroom fittings aim to convey?
The GROHE SPA Icon 3D collection aims to convey a sense of sophistication and exclusivity by transforming everyday bathroom elements into sculptural design artefacts, while also delivering emotional and sensory engagement through biophilic, nature-inspired forms. It reflects cutting-edge innovation and enhances the overall ambiance of the bathroom, contributing to an atmosphere of quiet luxury and thoughtful design.
What trends and developments are you currently observing in your industry?
The growing awareness of mental health and well-being has also influenced the evolution of the bathroom in recent years: from a purely functional space to a sanctuary for revitalisation and self-care. One key aspect of this transformation is biophilic design – a philosophy that brings nature back into the built environment through organic materials, natural light and greenery to evoke a sense of harmony and well-being. A collection like Icon 3D is fully aligned with this development.
