Interview with Cinzia Pignatti

Red Dot: What inspired you to create the Terramater collection?

Terramater is the outcome of extensive research into raw materials, glazes, colours and surfaces. It was born out of the desire to reference the red hues in the architecture and geology of the Sassuolo area of Modena, where the company is based, and to create a product made largely from recycled raw materials. At the same time, the collection pays homage to a single firing process patented by Marazzi 50 years ago. In 1974, this process represented a technological leap forward in the history of industrial ceramics because single firing saved a great deal of time and energy.

What target group did you have in mind when you developed Terramater?

The collection is intended for people who are looking for authentic, imperfect surfaces and warm materials that invite touch. It combines tradition with innovation, offering a beautifully tactile product that pays tribute to the bright ceramics of the 1970s in a contemporary way.

The tiles feature different textures. How important is the tactile experience?

It’s a fundamentally important aspect, which is why the surfaces of Ritmo and Losanga were created to invite touch. Ritmo has a playful structure that gives the wall a dynamic feel, while Losanga interprets more classic tile patterns. They offer plenty of design freedom since they can be positioned in a variety of patterns.

To what extent can tiles alter the effect of a room?

To a significant extent. The surfaces of the Terramater tiles have a very powerful presence that adds character and depth to interior spaces. These are not just wall coverings, but statement pieces that define the atmosphere of rooms.
